Let's Go Fishing! at Parker River NWR

Kids will get instruction in fishing techniques from park personel.

'Let's Go Fishing' is a Free Fun Family Day at the Parker River National Wildlife Refuge! This day log Family Event introduces kids and families to the world of fish and recreational fishing through fun hands-on activities and instruction. There will be a morning and afternoon session, making this a full day outing, so it's recommended that you pack a lunch and be ready to be outside all day!

The morning session begins at 9 am.  older kids will complete a series of fun, hands-on “fish learning stations” that will focus on such things as local fish identification, rod and reel assembly, predator-prey relationships, live and artificial baits, and casting target practice. Younger kids will explore the world of fish with a marine touch tank, fish printing, “make-a-fish,” and fish button-making. Event participants may arrive at the refuge visitor center anytime between 9:00 am and noon.

Following participation in the morning activities at the visitor center, kids will then have a chance to practice their new fishing skills on the refuge beach, where refuge volunteers experienced in surf fishing will provide additional guidance and support. The refuge will provide loaner rods and reels. Beginning at 11:00 am, a free shuttle bus will run between the visitor center and refuge beach at Lot 1. The afternoon session will conclude at 4:00 pm, with the last shuttle leaving the beach at 3:30 pm.

  • The event will proceed rain or shine
  • Pre-registration is NOT required.
  • This free public event is co-sponsored by Parker River National Wildlife Refuge and the Friends of Parker River.
